Tragedy in the NFL - Davon Belcher - How to remember?

Dec 11, 2012

It's never easy dealing with a tragedy.  It's even worse when it effects the place you work.  Davon Belcher shot his Girlfriend and then drove to the Kansas City Chiefs Practice Facility where he took his own life in front of the General Manager and the Head Coach.  It later came out that they knew something was going on and had the couple go to Therapy, but for whatever happened it doesn't look as though it helped too much.  the one thing I found odd when I first heard this was that he went to his place of work, not just to some random place to get away from everyone.  Why? We may never know.

Needless to say I think the larger controversy is remembrance of Javon.   He was a talented Football player, the organization is putting up his Jersey.  I don't necessarily agree with this.  Yes it is a tragedy, and i'm not saying you can't remember him, but typically old greats jerseys go in the rafters, or even people that died of things out of there control such as cancer.  As a Redskins fan Sean Taylor Tragedy was Horrible and Sad. I was at the Redskins game the week after Taylor passed away.  They put him in the ring of fame at the stadium, as well as moment of silent. This was a player that had so much potential and lost his life because he was murdered in his house. Javon on the other hand not only killed his Girlfriend but also took his own life.  I wish this weren't the case and he got the proper help but I just don't believe his jersey should be at least hung in the stadium.  Keep his locker the way it is in the locker room, this can be a reminder to his teammates, but for the general public to remember him I don't see it being a case where he should have his Jersey raised. Its as though they're praising him.

With this tragedy and the most recent Dallas Cowboys tragedy happening questions of, "what can the NFL do" come into play.  Already they have taken a stance on the concussions. Which is pretty apparent now the research shows hurt players long term, but for the short term they need to start putting programs in place that will help the players get the help they need.  Whether it be a hotline, or a Designated Driver program it needs to happen.  Not only for the players safety but also for the NFL Brand itself.  I think for these young professionals its hard enough going into a league that has so much exposure and pressure to preform.

My thoughts and prays go out to those effected by the most recent tragedy's in the NFL.
